Tractors and farm machinery: STOU, UTTO, or a dedicated engine oil?

Know what the three letters mean before choosing

  • STOU — Super Tractor Oil Universal. One oil for the engine, the transmission and the hydraulics. MAX STOU (10W-30, 15W-40, 20W-30) and ECO AGR R2 STOU 10W-40 on re-refined base oils. For a farm with one or two older tractors and no workshop, one drum instead of three is a real advantage, and fewer drums means fewer mis-fills.
  • UTTO — Universal Tractor Transmission Oil. Transmission, final drive, wet brakes and hydraulics — not the engine. EVO UTTO (SAE 80W, or 10W-30) and ECO AGR R2 UTTO 10W-30. The critical property is friction behaviour in wet brakes and the PTO clutch: the wrong oil here produces the brake chatter and clutch judder that farmers describe as a mechanical fault.
  • Dedicated engine oil. EVO AGR HYPER (10W-40, 15W-40) and EVO AGR ULTRA 5W-30 are low-SAPS heavy-duty engine oils for agricultural engines meeting European Stage V and EPA Tier 4 Final, and for older engines under severe load.

The STOU trap on a modern tractor

A tractor with exhaust after-treatment must not run a STOU oil in the engine. Stage V and Tier 4 Final machines carry particulate filters and SCR systems that need low-SAPS oil, and STOU products are high-SAPS by design because they also have to lubricate a transmission. Filling a new tractor with STOU because that is what the farm has always used will ash the filter, and the bill arrives long after anyone connects it to the oil.

On a modern machine the correct arrangement is two products: EVO AGR HYPER or ULTRA in the engine, EVO UTTO in the transmission and hydraulics. It is the conversation to have when a farm buys its first Stage V tractor, because that is the moment the old habit becomes expensive.

Iraqi farming conditions

Dust and long hours at partial load are the pattern here, and both shorten oil life. Service on hours where the machine has an hour meter. Two things matter more on a tractor than on a truck: the air filter, because field work generates more airborne dust than any road, and water in the hydraulics after irrigation work, which shows as cloudy oil and destroys pumps quietly.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between STOU and UTTO oil?

STOU (Super Tractor Oil Universal) serves the engine, transmission and hydraulics from one product, which suits older machines and farms without a workshop. UTTO (Universal Tractor Transmission Oil) serves the transmission, final drive, wet brakes and hydraulics but not the engine. The critical property in a UTTO is friction behaviour in wet brakes and the PTO clutch, because the wrong oil there causes the brake chatter and clutch judder that farmers usually report as a mechanical fault. Cyclon offers MAX STOU and ECO AGR R2 STOU, and EVO UTTO and ECO AGR R2 UTTO.

Can I use STOU oil in a modern Stage V or Tier 4 tractor?

No. Machines meeting European Stage V or EPA Tier 4 Final carry particulate filters and SCR systems that require a low-SAPS engine oil, and STOU products are high-SAPS by design because they must also lubricate a transmission. Filling a new tractor with STOU because it is what the farm has always used will load the filter with ash, and the cost appears long after anyone connects it to the oil. On a modern tractor use Cyclon EVO AGR HYPER or EVO AGR ULTRA in the engine and Cyclon EVO UTTO in the transmission and hydraulics.

How often should tractor oil be changed in Iraqi conditions?

On engine hours where the machine has an hour meter, and shorter than the manual suggests. Field work generates more airborne dust than road use, and long hours at partial load shorten oil life. Two things matter more on a tractor than on a truck: the air filter, and water in the hydraulics after irrigation work, which shows up as cloudy oil and destroys pumps quietly.
