Automatic transmission fluid is not a generic product

The error that destroys gearboxes

Automatic transmission fluid looks the same whatever the bottle, and the temptation to use one fluid for everything is strong. It is also the fastest way to destroy an expensive transmission, because the fluid's friction characteristics are part of the mechanical design, not a lubrication detail.

  • A CVT is not an automatic. A continuously variable transmission transmits torque through a steel belt or chain gripping a pulley, and it depends on a specific, high coefficient of friction. A Dexron-type fluid has the wrong friction properties and the belt will slip and destroy the pulley surfaces. Use PRO ATF CVT NS-2/-1 for Nissan and most CVT gearboxes, or PRO ATF S LV CVT where a fluid must serve both stepped automatics and CVTs.
  • A dual clutch transmission is not an automatic either. A DCT has wet clutches with their own friction requirement and needs PRO ATF S-DCT, a dedicated dual clutch fluid.
  • Modern multi-speed units have their own specifications. PRO ATF 8HP for ZF 8HP eight-speed and 6HP six-speed units in Audi, BMW, Jaguar and Land Rover; PRO ATF NG 7-9 for Mercedes-Benz 9G-Tronic (NAG3) and related units.

The rest of the range

  • EVO ATF HD LD — synthetic, for heavy-duty automatic transmissions from ZF, Voith, MAN and Daimler, with anti-shudder durability and extended drain performance. The bus and truck answer.
  • EVO ATF S-1A — synthetic, for Japanese passenger and light commercial vehicles, maintaining film thickness and anti-shudder durability.
  • MAX ATF TYPE H — premium fluid for GM automatic and semi-automatic transmissions requiring a DEXRON III type fluid, and transmissions requiring MERCON. ECO ATF R2 TYPE H is the same performance on re-refined base oils.
  • MAX ATF TYPE D — GM Dexron III, for high temperature and heavy load conditions.
  • MAX ATF TYPE A — GM TASA (Type A Suffix A), for older automatic and semi-automatic units.

“Lifetime fluid” does not mean the life of the vehicle in Iraq

Many manufacturers describe modern ATF as filled for life. That claim is made against European and North American operating conditions, and heat is what kills an automatic transmission. Sustained ambient above 45 °C, stop-and-go city traffic, long idling and towing all raise fluid temperature, and oxidation rate roughly doubles for every 10 °C. A transmission that would genuinely last 250,000 km in Germany is working far harder here.

For a vehicle the owner intends to keep, a periodic drain and fill with the correct specification fluid is cheap insurance against a rebuild. The important word is correct: a drain and fill with the wrong fluid is worse than leaving it alone.

One practical warning worth giving every customer: if a transmission is already slipping or shuddering badly, changing the fluid will not repair it, and on a high-mileage unit a full flush can sometimes bring a marginal transmission to failure sooner. Diagnose first, then service.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use Dexron automatic transmission fluid in a CVT?

No, and doing so will destroy the transmission. A continuously variable transmission transmits torque through a steel belt or chain gripping a pulley and depends on a specific high coefficient of friction that a Dexron-type fluid does not provide. The belt slips and damages the pulley surfaces. Use Cyclon PRO ATF CVT NS-2/-1 for Nissan and most CVT gearboxes, or Cyclon PRO ATF S LV CVT where one fluid must serve both stepped automatics and CVTs. A dual clutch transmission is equally specific and needs Cyclon PRO ATF S-DCT.

Is automatic transmission fluid really filled for life?

That claim is made against European and North American operating conditions. Heat is what kills an automatic transmission, and oxidation rate roughly doubles for every 10 degrees of fluid temperature. Sustained ambient above 45 degrees, stop-and-go traffic, long idling and towing all raise fluid temperature, so a transmission that would genuinely reach 250,000 km in Germany is working far harder here. For a vehicle the owner intends to keep, a periodic drain and fill with the correct specification fluid is cheap insurance against a rebuild.

Which fluid does a ZF 8HP transmission need?

Cyclon PRO ATF 8HP, a fully synthetic long-life fluid formulated for ZF 8HP eight-speed transmissions in Audi, BMW, Jaguar and Land Rover models, and also suitable for ZF 6HP six-speed units. For Mercedes-Benz 9G-Tronic (NAG3) nine-speed units, use Cyclon PRO ATF NG 7-9. For heavy-duty automatic transmissions from ZF, Voith, MAN and Daimler in buses and trucks, use Cyclon EVO ATF HD LD.

My automatic transmission is slipping. Will changing the fluid fix it?

Probably not. Fluid replacement does not repair mechanical wear, and on a high-mileage transmission that is already slipping or shuddering badly, a full flush can sometimes bring a marginal unit to failure sooner. Diagnose the cause first and then service it. Where the fluid is simply old and the transmission is sound, a drain and fill with the correct specification fluid is worthwhile; a drain and fill with the wrong specification is worse than leaving it alone.
