Garden machinery: the two-stroke classification, and chain oil

Two-stroke: FB, FC and FD are a ladder

The API TC classifications used on garden two-stroke oils ascend in detergency and cleanliness, and the right one depends on how hard the tool works:

  • MAX GRD 2T FB — basic lubrication and wear protection at low to medium load. For older or light-duty tools used occasionally.
  • MAX GRD 2T FC — cleaner burning with reduced smoke and deposits, for modern and older equipment at higher speeds and temperatures.
  • PRO GRD 2T FD — the highest detergency, clean-burning and low-ash, for intensive or continuous operation in air-cooled machinery. This is the one for a landscaping business rather than a garden shed.

Mix ratio follows the tool manufacturer and is not a matter of preference: more oil than specified fouls plugs and blocks exhaust ports, less risks seizing the engine.

Four-stroke

MAX GRD 4T — for lawn tractors, ride-on mowers, tillers and small petrol or diesel engines, controlling oxidation and deposits across varying outdoor temperatures.

Chain and guide bar oil

  • MAX GRD CHAIN — formulated with a tackiness agent so it stays on the chain instead of being flung off, protecting against wear, rust and corrosion, with good low-temperature flow.
  • ECO GRD CHAIN — biodegradable, for chainsaws and pruning equipment.

The biodegradable option is not a token: chain oil leaves the tool by design, so on orchard, date palm and municipal pruning work it ends up on the tree, the crop and the ground. Where that matters, it is the correct product rather than the premium one.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between FB, FC and FD two-stroke oil?

They are a ladder of detergency and cleanliness. Cyclon MAX GRD 2T FB gives basic lubrication for older or light-duty tools used occasionally. MAX GRD 2T FC burns cleaner with reduced smoke and deposits for modern equipment at higher speeds. PRO GRD 2T FD has the highest detergency and a low-ash, clean-burning formulation for intensive or continuous operation, which is what a landscaping or municipal operation needs rather than occasional garden use. Mix ratio always follows the tool manufacturer.

Is biodegradable chain oil worth paying for?

On orchard, date palm and municipal pruning work, yes, because chain oil leaves the tool by design. It ends up on the tree, the crop and the ground, which makes Cyclon ECO GRD CHAIN the correct product rather than the premium one. For general cutting where that does not apply, Cyclon MAX GRD CHAIN carries a tackiness agent that keeps it on the chain instead of being flung off, with rust and corrosion protection and good low-temperature flow.
