General purpose oils and engine flushing

Flushing oil: what it is for, and what it is not

FLUSHING OIL is a solvent-free detergent and dispersant fluid designed to clean an engine — with or without after-treatment — and also manual gearboxes and differentials, immediately before an oil change.

It earns its place in four situations: a high-mileage engine with visible sludge; switching between oil types or after running an incorrect oil; after a contamination event such as coolant or fuel in the sump; and on a neglected engine where the drain interval has been badly overrun.

Two cautions worth giving every customer. It is a short workshop procedure at idle, following the product instructions — not an oil to drive on. And on a very high-mileage engine, releasing accumulated deposits can occasionally unmask a leak or an oil-consumption problem that the deposits were masking. That is not the flush causing damage, but it is worth saying beforehand rather than afterwards.

General machinery oil

PREMIUM (SAE 10W, 30, 40) — high viscosity index mineral oils with anti-oxidant, anti-corrosion and anti-foam additives, resisting deposit formation and protecting against rust. For general machinery and low-load hydraulic and circulating systems.

This is the honest answer when a customer wants one oil for a workshop's assorted machinery. Where a system runs at real pressure, it is not the right product — use a proper anti-wear hydraulic oil instead.

Frequently asked questions

When should an engine be flushed before an oil change?

Four situations justify it: a high-mileage engine with visible sludge, switching between oil types or after an incorrect oil has been used, after a contamination event such as coolant or fuel in the sump, and on a neglected engine where the drain interval has been badly overrun. Cyclon FLUSHING OIL is solvent-free and serves engines with or without after-treatment, and also manual gearboxes and differentials. It is a short workshop procedure at idle following the product instructions, not an oil to drive on.

Is there a single oil I can use for assorted workshop machinery?

Cyclon PREMIUM in SAE 10W, 30 or 40 is the honest answer for general machinery and low-load hydraulic and circulating systems, with anti-oxidant, anti-corrosion and anti-foam additives. Where a system runs at genuine pressure it is the wrong product, and a proper anti-wear hydraulic oil should be used instead.
